Our recruit training program is very challenging and will provide recruits with all the training they require to become a full service firefighter as laid out in the Province of BC Playbook. Past firefighting experience or training can be an asset but isn’t required to do well.

Graduates of recruit training will serve a probationary three month period in which time they will gain valuable experience as a member of their crew. Graduates must be able to pass all written exams and regular skill assessments to earn their "yellow" helmet.

This course and the exams are based on NFPA 1002: Standard on Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications but is tailored to meet the needs of the Salmon Arm Fire Department, This course is designed for the firefighter who wishes to become a apparatus driver/operator. This course consists of four modules: , Driving/Operating, fire pumps, pumping operations, and apparatus Inspections.

  • Safety:
    Ensuring adherence to safety protocols, monitoring fire behavior, and managing emergency situations during training. 
Specific Skills and Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Fire Service Standards: Familiarity with NFPA standards, BC Fire Service training standard
  • Physical Fitness: Able to perform strenuous activities and withstand the demands of the fire service. Communication Skills: Excellent communication and presentation skills for effective instruction and safety briefings. 
  • Firefighting Experience: Significant experience in firefighting operations. 
  • Relevant Certifications: Firefighter Level II, Fire Service Instructor Level I, and possibly other certifications related to specific training areas.
