The junior firefighter academy is an academic program run by the Salmon Arm Fire Department in conjunction with the College of the Rockies and School District 83. The program gives high school students a chance to learn and build on the Salmon Arm Fire Department values of Teamwork, Pride, Professionalism and Respect. The program also teaches Leadership, Community Involvement, and Mentorship. Upon completion of the program, the junior firefighter will receive four (4) high school credits, and if a 70% mark has been achieved, you will be qualified as an exterior operations firefighter as described in the Province of B.C. Fire Service Playbook.
The junior firefighter program involves many team oriented, hands-on activities and therefore, students who show initiative, have the ability to work with others, are enthusiastic and show a willingness to learn will enjoy the program.
The program is 13 months in total and begins each September ends in the following November. September-December junior firefighters attend regular Tuesday night practices at their assigned hall from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. In January, the Junior firefighter will attend recruit practices which run Monday from 6:30pm to 9:30. To get the most out of the program it is recommended, but not mandatory, that the junior firefighter also attend the regularly Tuesday night practices during this time.
The Junior Firefighter program is a hands-on learning opportunity. Among many other things, junior firefighters actually get to:
- perform search and rescue operations
- learn basic First aid and CPR
- climb a 15M (50 ft) Aerial Ladder
- fight real fires under controlled situations
...and so much more!
The program is open to male or female students who are in grade 11 or 12, are in good academic standing, are responsible, and reside in the City of Salmon Arm.
Currently there is a $150 fee for registration for the College of the Rockies. The program provides the necessary uniforms, binders and reference material for each junior firefighter.
